About Comrie Family
Please sign in to see more. This site is dedicated to the Comrie/Wilson families from Jamaica, also the Chin and Lynch connections. The family immigrated to England in 1953 only to return to live in Jamaica in 1964. Soon after Leroy moved to Canada, Jacqueline and Hyacinth moved to Florida while Norma and her family moved to Atlanta. The name Comrie comes from the Gaelic word "Comarach" which means river-fork,. There is an area near Comrie Scotland that could have a fork in the river which I assume was a tributary of the river Tay. Scotts that were sent to Jamaica by the British land owners were sent to manage the land and slaves, I guess they did more than that.
The life at times of Christiana Comrie (nee) Wedderburn Born December 11, 1911 at Grange Westmoreland- Parents Octavius Wedderburn and Rosetta Harrison - siblings Setlyn Lola and Jocelyn - children Leighton Adrian Wright (father constable Wright)- Norma Elaine Watson born May 1942 (father Ralph Watson) - Hyacinth Yvonne (Feb 1946), Jasmine Louise (Aug 1947, Leroy Anthony(Aug 1949) and Jacqueline Ann (Nov 1956). Profession - seamstress (maker of clothing very good I might add), other jobs machinist (brass airplane parts) Nurses Aid (U.K. and U.S.A.) Office Cleaner and housekeeper. Her first son, Leighton eldest son brought up by grand mother Rosetta in Darliston, Leighton completed his elementary schooling, then came to live in Petersfield with the family. In 1949/50he worked on a truck delivering ice, he had a hearing problem, but I am told he organized our first Christmas (tree/gifts) in Petersfield, Once in a while he visit the family in Petersfield, my only memory of Leighton was seeing him punch two holes in a egg of a chicken suck out the contents. Leighton did not go with the family to England, he had 4 children. His death came by accident, he fell off a truck in 1970 went into a coma and died. Grand uncle Obadiah had 3 daughters - Carmelita (bibs) married name Taylor, lived in England-then moved back to Kingston JA. Marlene (bibby) married name Thompson lives in St. Elizabeth and Lilian (babs) a lot of "B" married name Laing lives in Kingston JA. Of note Seraphima Wedderburn was mums step-mother I understand there is a website (Foresters yard-Foresters of Jamaica) I don't have pictures of our late Aunt Mavis and uncle Roy as yet.
The family lived in England from 1953-1965. We left Kingston in January 1953 (my own memory of the departure was that of me seeing a submarine in the harbor (don't ask me how I came to that conclusion, I was age 3-when we left, needless to say no one can collaborate this). before departure we stayed in Kingston with Aunt Clarice Pottinger (cousin) took a taxi early morning from Port Antonio to board the SS Cavina (banana boat) to England. Mother and 4 children 3 girls 10-7-6 and me 3 years old. 15 days on the ship at sea, I was seasick all of 14 days, and that affliction has stayed with me to this day, the food was awful I'm told, arrived at Avonmouth in Bristol February 10, 1953, the girls were dressed in yellow taffeta, jippy jappa hats (I have never seen one), black patent leather shoes and white ankle socks. I was dressed in short pants shirt and jacket. Mother went on deck saw a man on the pier and was sure it was her husband, she waived frantically with a broad grin on her face, later she relayed she was waving at someone else's husband. Our father was not on the
pier to meet us, he was in London, looking back this was a sign of things to come. Mother had to borrow money (another sign that later became part of our life) from passengers to buy ticket so that we could travel to London. A woman wrapped us up in a large Scottish scarf as it was very cold, the trip to London was uneventful, there we were met by Father (at Easton station) with coats on a very cold Feb winter night. Took a taxi to Rosedale Rd Dulwich S.E. London our new abode for the next 7 months, the home belonged to Uncle Harry cousin Lesma's father. We were shown into the basement of the home where our father had rented 1 1/2 rooms for a family of six people, we had to share an outside toilet, and a small kitchen with another west indian family from Guyana and we all shared the bathroom upstairs. The family reunion was not a happy one, mummy cried a lot to see what we now had as a home. the next day mummy went to look for a job in the tailoring hub of petticoat Lane. Norma the eldest daughter was left to take care of her siblings. That day Norma cooked her first family meal of beef soup so that mother did not have to come home and cook. During the 7 months at uncle Harry's we were placed in school, Father did not want us to be out of school too long. We got our ration cards for milk, eggs and orange juice. Our father also went north to the tailoring towns of Yorkshire (Leeds-Halifax-Bradford) to look for a better job, he eventually found a job with a tailoring factory call Harella and paid down $500.00 on a house and then told us to come north. Our new home was 22 Carr Place a single broken down home on the corner of the street. On the opposite side was the only other brick home standing in the subdivision occupied by some Irish people who had been duped just like us by a slick lawyer praying on the newcomers. As I said everything else around us was demolished our house had 3 levels, a basement where coal was kept, a first floor with 2 rooms and a small kitchen, an outside toilet and on the 3rd floor 2 bedrooms a kitchen and a bathroom. In the kitchen was a stove a gas meter, sink and what look like a table, but was really a bath with a cover., another disappointment for our mother but she took it in stride and set about cleaning and painting until we had a home. People gave us a lot of household things, plates pots etc. everything to make a home and of course as soon as we could we had to go to school, Blenheim for Norma/Leroy Querry Mount for Hyacinth and Jasmine. Spent about 2 years at the house before we were offered a council house at 21 Stonegate Street because the house that we were in was to be demolished. Stonegate street was a 3 bedroom home with a living room, family room and a kitchen with a small larder and front garden. I was always sent out to get coal from the coal storage room on the outside at the back of the house, I'm sure my sisters will have a different story as to who got the coal.
